South Campus residents are able to feel like they don't live right on campus, but still enjoy the convenience of being close enough to walk to their classes. The Fairhaven Commons is nearby, so residents never have to walk far for a meal.

Birnam Wood is a perfect combination of independent living and campus support. Birnam Wood are upper-class (non-freshman) apartments where students live in apartments that consist of two double bedrooms, full kitchen, bathroom, and common living area.

Each space is designed to comfortably accommodate four students or a family. For students interested in apartment living, Birnam Wood offers this environment located a short distance from campus, with a resident advisor staff available to assist with roommate conflicts, noise concerns, and personal and academic support.

A community building houses an information desk, lounge with TV, and laundry room. Transportation to campus is readily available by Whatcom Transit Authority buses, which stop right outside.

Apartments are fully furnished, partially furnished units are not available. All utilities are included, including electricity, water, garbage/recycling pick up, basic cable TV, high-speed Internet, and local telphone.

Residents are not required to purchase a meal plan, but may do so if they wish. Convenient nearby parking is available for an additional fee. Birnam Wood apartments are available for full-year occupancy. Requests by freshmen to live in Birnam Wood are reviewed on a case by case basis.

Dimensions:
Each unit is approximately 845 square feet. The average double room is 129 square feet.

Flooring:
Carpet throughout, except vinyl tile in bathroom and kitchen

Lighting:
There are overhead, floor, and desk lighting in each unit. Many students choose to bring additional lighting.

The community building at Birnam Wood houses an information desk, laundry room and lounge. The lounge contains ample seating, television, and piano. There is also a outside picnic area for residents to enjoy.

Birnam Wood Community Activities

What separates Birnam Wood from an off-campus apartment is the staff support as well as the variety of community programming and special events. There are Resident Advisors close by to provide support. Also, residents may join an active Community Council and participate in activities such as movie nights, potlucks, or the annual all campus Murder Mystery Dinner!

Birnam Wood is also home to the largest population of international students on campus, making it truly a unique and diverse community. There are students from countries such as: Austria, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Ukraine, the Philippines, France, Mongolia, Germany, the Republic of Korea (and more!).
